My back pain has significantly reduced

I have been taking pilates for a little over one year with Sonia at Progressive Pilates in Hamilton and I personally have found it to be hugely beneficial to my work, health and personal life.

I have a degenerated disc [L1] in my lower back which used to give enormous problems and limited my ability to play sport even at a social level. I have had three steroidal injections to help with the pain but they have only lasted 3-4 months each time. I was even at the stage of contemplating having a surgical procedure to sort this problem which would help the pain but leave me with limited mobility in my lower back. At this time an Osteopath suggested I try Pilates first.

Since starting pilates with Sonia I have found my back pain has significantly reduced as my core muscles are so much stronger and can thus support my lower back to much greater effect.  I am no longer considering surgery as I am able to manage the pain by maintaining my core strength and stability with pilates.

I work at a computer most of the day and find I can now sit comfortably for longer periods and don’t go home at the end of the day with an aching back.  Pilates has really helped my posture, and while it is not perfect, I am more aware of which muscles I need to activate to correct my poor habilts.

Pilates has really impacted on my social and family life too as I have been able to regain my fitness  and there by my energy levels, enabling me to make the most of my down time.

Lastly as a man attending what has been seen as a women’s exercise programme, I was naturally a little apprehensive to start with. Sonia however, made me feel comfortable from day one and I would confidently recommend her to anyone thinking of starting pilates. She is extremely knowledgeable and is able to design a programme to suit the needs of her individual clients.

Pilates has been the gentle and enjoyable solution to my back pain for which I am extremely thankful.

    Regards,
    Phil Holah
